[Continued from previous page] Mile after mile dragged its way beneath our wheels and the scenes of destruction which flowed by on either side of us gave mute but vivid testimony of the bloody battles which had preceded our advance. Tanks, trucks, guns were everywhere, much of it our own—most of it the enemys. They were hardly recognizable as the tools of war. Many graveyards dot the countryside (German Graveyards). Each day that passes adds to my optimism. No country can lose the men and equipment which Germany has lost and continue for long. We arrived at our new location about 1600. Set up our C.P.  Had chow and then hit the sack.

Tuesday, 30 January 1945 Braunlauf, Belgium
Arose at 0600, loafed around until 0800, had breakfast and took a trip to Bn. I was riding in the cab of a 2 1/2 ton truck and while passing another vehicle, my driver ran off the road and became stuck. After jockeying back and forth for about 20 minutes we finally pulled free and resumed our journey. We had gone about a 100 yards further, when a terrific blast sounded to the rear of us. We turned around just in time to see parts of a 3/4 ton truck sailing thru the air. It had run over the same spot where we had just been stuck and hit a mine, which we evidently had straddled. The truck was completely demolished and its load deposited about 50 feet from it. We hurried back, rendered first aid and hurried the driver (the only occupant) to a collecting station, nearby.
