[Continued from previous page] which, upon questioning her, I found to be empty. She seemed in such a hurry to be on her way that I became suspicious but having nothing but my suspicions to go on, I practically had to let her go. I followed her backtrail for some distance, thinking that she might have brought food to some Jerries but the path which she had followed led to a little log house, which showed no signs of recent occupancy and because by this time I was further than I considered sensible or safe from my Hqrs., I retraced my steps and returned to camp. About an hour later a squad of infantrymen led by a Lt. came from the woods with 8 PW’s. They stopped to talk to us and I learned that they had taken the Jerries about a hundred yards beyond the log house, where they were concealed in foxholes. Just before noon, I went down to the stream to see if there were any trout that I could shoot but this proved impossible. Next I found a deep pool some distance from camp and tossed a grenade in the water. After the explosion, I jumped up and raked in 8 nice trout, with a long stick. The concussion had stunned them and caused them to float on the surface. I shall bribe one of the cooks into fixing them for me. I think that 4 of them will make a nice meal. At 1300, we march ordered and headed toward Dresden.1Dresden is the capital of the Saxony region of Germany and is situated in eastern Germany near the border with the Czech Republic. Goetz here describes the massive bombing attack on Dresden, which occurred in four raids over the three day period of 13-15 February 1945. The bombing and resulting firestorm destroyed over 1600 acres of central Dresden. Approximately 25,000 Germans were killed in the attack. We are to meet up with the Russians near there as our final objective. We traveled 38 miles through more of the same beautiful country. In places, it isn’t so beautiful anymore. We are only a matter of hours behind the infantry and houses are still burning as we pass through the towns. We keep our Machine Guns trained on both sides of the street as we go through, “Just in case.” Many PWs are being hauled from cellars as we drive along. We reached Remda at 1700. May stay just for the night. Hit the sack 2000.
