[Continued from previous page] Huge flights of bombers passed over head again today. We never tire of watching them; they are graceful things to be so deadly. Fire Unit 5 engaged two jet propelled airplanes last night.  They were traveling at extreme speed and results could not be observed. Our Bn. is 5th out of 48 units in the 3rd army in Batting average. Not a bad record. I have that feeling of an impending move again. We have been in one place a long while, for us. The Russians are still progressing. I hope that we meet soon. Wrote two letters today. Hit the sack 2100.

Up at 0700. Very little sleep last night. Some of our heavier artillery moved up and by a constant barrage kept both the Jerries and ourselves awake. Every time a shell starts on its way, someone will remark “Hitler! count your men.” We carry our gas masks constantly, now that the Germans have their backs to the wall, they’re capable of trying anything. The weather, which has been cloudy for the past few days, has cleared up. The sun is shining beautifully now. Lt. Durham made his 1st the 16th of Feb.1 Second Lieutenant John L. Durham. We have only one 2D Lt. now. Two of our men who were hospitalized – Blocker, Kocher, have returned to duty.2 Corporal John G. Blocker and possibly Corporal Herbert J. Koch.   We picked up a replacement today fresh from the states – (CPL. Barth) – We seem to be the only outfit which puts up a shelter around its latrine. Everywhere one looks, Bare Buttocks are flashing in the sun. Worked on our own situation maps for a while tonight. Hit the sack at 2200.

Two magazine cut-outs of naked women. When he attached them to his diary page, Goetz labeled the nude figures, “Two German Contributions to World Culture.”
