Saturday, 10 March [1945] Lissendorf, Germany
Up at 0600. Shaved and had breakfast by 0730. The day has been eventful and interesting. One of “D” Btry.’s men received a pistol wound last night and an “A” Btry. driver was seriously wounded, when his truck backed over a mine. We are cleaning out the pockets of Germans which were bypassed in our race to the Rhine. Prisoners are being taken in great numbers. So many at one time, that all we could do was disarm them and direct them to our lines. Our bridge head across the Rhine has been extended to a mile in depth. The Russians are beginning to move toward Berlin again. Everything is going our way at the present time. Some mail came in today. I received two letters but still no cigars. We are a mobile outfit and have many trucks available whenever we stay put for more than a day. We, in addition to our regular assignments, often use these trucks to bring up replacements or vital supplies. There is a radio, in the house, which we are using. We had our radio technician repair it and hooked it in to our own generator. It works very well. I hit the sack at 2100.
Sunday, 11 March [1945] Lissendorf, Germany
Up at 0700. This has been a very uneventful day. We cleaned our equipment and did general maintenance in preparation for a move to the Rhine which we expect in a day or two. Some of the men went to services in the morning, a division Chaplain presided. The weather has clouded up again. I packed a German Mauser today.1 Mauser was a German weapons manufacturer. Goetz was probably packing a Luger pistol. I will send it home as soon as the [continued on next page]
