{"id":2151,"date":"1945-03-21T18:25:00","date_gmt":"1945-03-21T18:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/humanitieslab.goucher.edu\/lest-i-forget\/?p=2151"},"modified":"2023-05-12T04:46:31","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T04:46:31","slug":"page-88","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/humanitieslab.goucher.edu\/lest-i-forget\/diary\/page-88\/","title":{"rendered":"Page 88"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Wednesday, 21 March [1945]    8 miles N.E.&nbsp;Obern<\/strong><br>Up at 0600, another beautiful day, quite fitting for the first day of spring, Corporal Davis and myself went scouting today as far as the Rhine.&nbsp; We saw no Germans and very little of anything else.&nbsp; Later in the afternoon, I went out by myself to try for a deer.&nbsp; I came back with a huge hare, didn\u2019t see a deer.&nbsp; The 1<sup>st<\/sup> platoon expects to move out of our division area tomorrow.&nbsp; I think they are to provide AA protection to the F.A. en route to the 90<sup>th<\/sup> Division area.&nbsp; They will probably return the next day.&nbsp; Our division took Coblenz today, our main objective.&nbsp; The 3<sup>rd<\/sup> and 7<sup>th<\/sup> armies are converging in the Saar area.&nbsp; Their junction will trap many thousands of Germans who are now trying to escape to the Rhine.&nbsp; I slept fine last night on a blanket of leaves.&nbsp; Was both warm and comfortable.&nbsp; I have covered about 25 miles of rugged country today and hope to do a lot of patrolling if we remain in this area.&nbsp; Received 5 letters today.&nbsp; Hit the sack at 2000.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thursday, 22 March [1945]   8 miles N.E.&nbsp; Obern<\/strong><br>Up at 0600. What a morning.&nbsp; The second day of spring but more like a summer day. The 3<sup>rd<\/sup> and 7<sup>th<\/sup> armies have joined forces to clean up the Saar and we now control the Rhine river from Holland to Switzerland.&nbsp; We have taken thousands of prisoners during the past 24 hours and the Germans are reeling from the many blows which they have been dealt.&nbsp; I took a reconnaissance down to the Rhine river today, just for the hell of it.
