The water would shoot a hundred feet into the air. I don\u2019t know whether they got the subs or not &#8211; at least they chased them away. I wonder if there is any land left. I forget what it looks like. Our heavy weight, Germane, had a bout today in preparation for the final engagement. He won an easy decision over his opponent- boxing skillfully and carrying his man. I noticed the champ watching the conflict. He doesn\u2019t seem very enthused. I wonder if he senses impending defeat. I am sure that he does. I think that I will double my bet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sunday, 8 October [1944]   HMT,<em> Highland Monarch<\/em><\/strong><br>Day\u2019s run 293 miles (total 2890) \u2013 Sunday. But just another day for most of us. We had services aboard ship but in every other way the day was routine. Some of the vessels left our convoy \u2013 probable destination France. One of the crew taught us the English money system. It isn\u2019t difficult but it is silly as the devil. We gained another hour last night the total is now 5. When we are having dinner (PX dinner) you are just getting up. Bob and I have just about talked ourselves out- It isn\u2019t easy to entertain one another day after day- when nothing happens which is of interest. Tomorrow, Germane meets the champ and everyone is praying for a clear day. Poor champ. His 2 day crown must weigh heavily in its unaccustomed place. Bob and I are going to sleep on deck tonight.
