{"id":11,"date":"2021-11-10T14:54:39","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T19:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/humanitieslab.goucher.edu\/world-pottery\/?page_id=11"},"modified":"2023-11-01T12:35:06","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T16:35:06","slug":"homepage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/humanitieslab.goucher.edu\/world-pottery\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-background\" style=\"background:linear-gradient(135deg,rgb(238,238,238) 27%,rgb(169,184,195) 100%)\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A love of the antique and a desire to preserve tradition [making ceramics] are generally undercurrents in society but ones which exert considerable influence on the character of  given period. <\/p>\n<cite> <em>\u5ba3\u5fb7&nbsp; (Xuande) &#8211; Introduction<\/em> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000;font-size:5vw;line-height:1.1\"><strong>IMPRINTED:<\/strong> <strong><strong><strong>POTTERY FROM DIFFEREN<\/strong>T CULTURES<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of human civilization, both pottery and books have been used to record traditions,&nbsp;stories&nbsp;and cultural practices.&nbsp;This exhibition strikes to cover the tradition of making pottery in different cultures, as well as&nbsp;contribute to the greater Goucher&nbsp;collection.&nbsp;Pottery\/Ceramics making and book-making are the two&nbsp;diverse ways&nbsp;to transfer knowledge and images.&nbsp;In addition,&nbsp;the production of&nbsp;pottery,&nbsp;ceramics,&nbsp;or books&nbsp;brings about the question of sustainable material and integration of human creativity with their&nbsp;surroundings.&nbsp;We want to combine these two valuable aspects of ancient cultures and&nbsp;societies in our exhibition because they also represent human\u2019s ingenuity&nbsp;and engagement with&nbsp;the&nbsp;natural environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two books that are included in this exhibition&nbsp;are&nbsp;the two volumes of&nbsp;<em>History of Ancient Pottery<\/em>&nbsp;by Samuel Birch&nbsp;which&nbsp;highlights&nbsp;the history of pottery in Ancient Roman, Greek, Etruscan, Assyrian, and Egyptian cultures. The other book included in the&nbsp;exhibition is&nbsp;<em>Chinese Porcelain<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>\u5ba3\u5fb7&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;Xuande<\/em>)&nbsp;which&nbsp;documents the history of porcelains and ceramics in China, during the reign of&nbsp;Xuande&nbsp;Emperor &#8211; the fifth Emperor of the Ming dynasty (1425 to 1435).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.38%\">\n<p><strong><em>History Of Ancient Pottery\u200b<\/em><\/strong><br>by Samuel Birch\u200b<br>1858, two volumes&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volume I covers pottery from Ancient Egypt, Assyria, and Greece. Volume II covers pottery from Ancient Greek, Etruscan, and Roman society. While belonging to a different culture, the book also uses Western binding.
