The Goucher Art and Artifact Collection dates to the founding of the college in 1885, when Dr. John Franklin Goucher donated pieces from his personal collection for the benefit of students. The purpose of Goucher’s art and artifact collection, which now numbers over 1,500 pieces, has always been two-fold: to adorn college buildings and grounds with art, and to serve as a teaching tool.

Over the years, the college has purchased some items for its collection, but the majority of pieces have been gifts from Alumnae/i. and other generous donors. A majority of the artifacts win the collection are pottery and our goal with these three books is for students to use them in aiding their research with Goucher’s Art & Artifact Collection. There is a wide range of pottery in the collection, coming from Greece, Rome, Egypt, Africa, Eastern Asia, and Central or South America.

These books will help strengthen Goucher’s literary works regarding pottery and will also aid in our knowledge and understanding of the objects that are currently in our collection. We aim to have students incorporate or use these books in majors such as VMC, Philosophy, and History along minors like Studio Art, and Asian Studies.
